Were you looking for another "Fire Dogs"?

"Fire Dogs 2" is the third episode of Ren & Stimpy "Adult Party Cartoon". The first part first aired on July 17, 2003, and the second part first aired on July 24, 2003.

Plot[]

Continuing after the events of the original "Fire Dogs", grateful that the duo handled their first fire rescue very well, the fire chief morphs into a caricature of Ralph Bakshi and lets them stay in their apartment. Together, they become bachelors and earn "equal pay".

Trivia[]

  • Much like "Altruists" and "Stimpy's Pregnant" (international airings only), this episode was split into two parts during its televised airings, due to John K. neglecting to complete the episode on time, similar to his failure to do so during production of the original Ren & Stimpy series. The other reason is because of the episode's runtime of 30 minutes.
    • When Part 1 of this episode aired, it was packaged alongside "Fire Dogs" from the original Ren & Stimpy series, which aired prior to the first half of this episode. Throughout Part 1 on televised airings are original live-action wraparounds filmed in black-and-white, serving as a homage to The Honeymooners, titled Ralph's Playhouse. In them, Ralph Bakshi, in the role of Ralph Kramden, calls up "John Kricfalusi" from his house, checking up on production on the episode. John tells Ralph that the episode is incomplete and tells him to present the first half of the episode right after presenting the original "Fire Dogs" cartoon. Part 1 ends with the chief and the duo leaving the apartment, on their way to the pizzeria. The intro and end credits are not present in Part 1, but are in Part 2.
    • Part 2 opens with a recap, narrated by Stinky Whizzleteats, voiced by John K. himself. Also, Part 2 picks up right where Part 1 left off, with the crew at the pizzeria.
    • The complete version of the episode can be found on the Ren & Stimpy: The Lost Episodes DVD.
  • "Fire Dogs 2" was going to be a sequel to the original "Fire Dogs" episode from the show's first season, but was not planned for an episode of the original show for Nickelodeon, and the idea was put on hold until a decade later when Adult Party Cartoon was announced.
  • This was the last episode of Adult Party Cartoon to air on television, but not the last to be produced. The remaining three episodes in the series were being produced around the time Spike TV cancelled it.
  • The scene in which the chief wakes up from slumber and stares off into the distance has become an Internet meme.
  • This episode included live-action segments with Ralph Bakshi and the original "Fire Dogs" episode, even re-using that episode's title card.
  • ”The Flute Dance” would be referenced in the fighting game Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl as Ren and Stimpy’s taunt, making it the first time anything Adult Party Cartoon related would appear in an official Nickelodeon licensed product.
  • The music from "The Flute Dance" scene was earlier used in an old Betty Boop cartoon.
  • Instead of The Ren & Stimpy Show, it's titled The Tommy & Eddie Show because the fire chief kept calling the two Tom/Tommy and Eddie throughout this episode.
  • The names Tommy and Eddie are likely references to Tom Minton and Eddie Fitzgerald, who had previously worked with Bakshi on the Mighty Mouse cartoon during the 1980s.
    • Eddie might be referring to Ren Höek's uncle.
  • As mentioned earlier, when this episode first aired, the original Fire Dogs episode aired before it, but with the Log commercial and Ask Dr. Stupid segments removed.
  • Ralph Bakshi's license plate says "FRITZ" which is a reference to the film Fritz the Cat which he directed.

Reception[]

Well-known cartoon devotee Thad Komorowski gave this episode a "Bomb" rating on his Sick Little Monkeys: The Unauthorized Ren & Stimpy Story book. He said in regards to it: "More unpleasantness without a thing going for it". He also called it "the most devastating catastrophe of Adult Party Cartoon", "an outright embarrassment" and noted that "there is no reason for Ren and Stimpy to be in Fire Dogs 2. Opportunities for them to act are nonexistent". As for the references to Ralph Bakshi's behavior, he wrote that "one can gain a better sense of who Ralph Bakshi really is by watching one of Bakshi's own films". John Kricfalusi himself admitted on his blog that this episode suffers abysmal animation timing and slow pacing and encouraged the viewers to play the episode at double speed.
