Christopher Mason "Chris" Savino (born October 2, 1971) is a former American animator, writer, storyboard artist, producer, and director.
He was born in Royal Oak, Michigan, which Royal Woods, the city The Loud House takes place in, is a parody of.
He is best known as the creator of The Loud House on Nickelodeon.
In Ren and Stimpy, he was known as a layout artist for The Ren & Stimpy Show from years 1991-1996. He left the series after the show ended in 1996 to work on future cartoons for Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network.
Biography[]
Savino got his start in animation as a layout artist on The Ren & Stimpy Show in 1991. He later worked as a character and prop designer on Nickelodeon's Rocko's Modern Life in 1993, and has since worked as a writer and director on such series as: Dexter's Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, My Life as a Teenage Robot, Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends, Kick Buttowski: Suburban Daredevil and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
He has worked at Spümcø, Joe Murray Studios, Nickelodeon Animation Studios, Hanna Barbera, Xilam, Cartoon Network Studios, and Disney Television Animation, and is currently planning a live-action short called Bigfoot & Gray: On the Run, and an animated film called Adventures in Milk.
In 2014, his short for The Loud House was greenlit by Nickelodeon and began to become a full series ever since 2016.
On November 1, 2019, Savino released his debut children's novel, Coal: A Cautionary Christmas Tale, through Amazon Publishing. Later on December of the same year he published the first installment of his graphic novel duology titled Bigfoot & Gray.
Since January 5, 2020, he also publishes the Sunday strip For Brothers.
On March 3, 2020, he published his first non-fiction book, a guide to write cartoons entitled Writing Cartoons in 4 Acts (Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Midpoint).
Firing from Nickelodeon[]
On October 17th 2017, Cartoon Brew reported Nickelodeon suspending Chris Savino from their studio due to multiple allegations of sexual abuse and harassment until two days later, a spokesman at Nickelodeon confirmed that Savino was eventually fired from Nickelodeon two days later, and announced The Loud House would continue production later on.
On October 23rd, 2017. Savino spoke up for the first time since the allegations first appeared, saying he was "deeply sorry" for his actions. On May 30, 2018, Savino was given a one-year suspension from The Animation Guild, I.A.T.S.E. Local 839. As part of his plea bargain with The Animation Guild, Savino was ordered to donate $4,000 to a charity chosen by the guild, complete 40 hours of community service, undergo counseling, and obtain a certificate of sexual harassment training.
In a September 2019 interview, Chris Savino has mentioned his regret about his actions. In October 2019, Savino claimed to be a born-again Christian.
